Tech Spec Card - Clip and Save! by JZLobo Tech Spec Card - Clip and Save! by JZLobo
I figured it was time for a new devID picture. This homages the old Maximal tech spec cards of the Beast Wars figures. I still have most of mine... it's amazing what a huge influence that show has had in my life.

Beast Wars got me into Transformers got me onto message boards got me into RPGs got me interested in writing. Along that path I've made all my closest friends, including my awesome girlfriend.

"Function: Lethargic Action Hero" :giggle: Love it! I also like the line about sharing fantasy worlds if we're not careful. Great ID! I really need to make one some day. I just haven't found an idea (ha ha, I.D.ea - lame, I know) I like yet. One day, inspiration will strike...

My life has been full of so many twists and turns, I sometimes feel like I'm in an action movie, despite my, shall we say, laid-back personality.

You could always borrow the "tech spec" idea. ;)

I feel there has to be a way to test these statistics. Perhaps with an obstacle course and fire.

I think that intelligence stat is a bit low.

I suppose it would depend somewhat on the scale. Is five average, or is 10 defined by the most clever Transformer/character/what have you?

Your score is probably accurate if you decided on it by using standard deviations of IQ score and defining one whole point of tech spec as a standard deviation of IQ score (or 15 IQ points) and defining 5.0 as an IQ of 100%. Under that system I would be something like a 6.5 (and not as smart as you), and 7.0 would correspond to the lowest "genius" threshhold under most IQ tests, which is 130. People with an IQ of 130 or higher make up only 2.1% of the population, whiich is why Mensa sets the bar a bit higher (for a nice even 2%).

But then you think about the implications of that system, and it would posit that 75% of the population (human or Transformer) would fall between 4 and 6. That would make the intelligence stat functionally useless for all but the dimmest and most intelligent of bots! Does the system exist to sort out the best of the best, or as a functional assessment of the average bot?

If the scale were meant to be descriptive for everyone and meaningful for all, it would have to be arranged in clusters of 10%: 9-10 are the 10% smartest, 0-1 are the 10% dimmest, and everyone else is in between. The range of That would lead to an impressive amount of detail in sorting the middle of the pack, but would lump conventional smart folk like us in with all the unparalleled geniuses. Suddenly the tech spec of 9 would indicative of merely an intellectual minimum, and a lowly person like me would be so laughably inferior to even someone with a 9.5 that the spec would be meaningless to anyone who actually fell into the 9-10 range. It would also mean that Optimus Prime is the smartest person ever, although this system would put his 10 as potentially less intelligent than one based on standard deviation.

...Long story short, I can think of situations where a 7 would be way too low for you, the tech spec system is as inherently stupid and elitist as IQ itself, and the ease with which I put more thought into random, bored comments than Hasbro does into their toylines is frightening.

Hahaha. Yeah, I think the tech spec stats were never put much thought into. I always figured 5 was average, myself. But then you rarely ever see a 2 or 3 on anyone's stats. They can't ALL be above average, unless you're comparing them to stock generics in the background who don't get toys. Hell, most of those stats are dependent on arbitrary whims.

I like to think I have slightly above average intelligence, if only because it often seems like the majority of people in the world are so... freaking... stupid. I've never taken an IQ test to prove it, though.

The tech specs only make sense if compared to stock generics in the background under any reasonable system. Plus, even if 5 is average, it's still difficult to tell how the scale progresses upwards. I mean, I came up with two different systems where the smartest person would be a 10 and the average would be a five, arbitrarily assigned you an IQ of 130 based on your choice of 7 against the "harsher" system, and then extrapolated you as deserving a 9 under a different system with the same average and top points, but a different distribution to get there. All this while I have a cold and a headache.

I would be shocked if you were average intelligence; you seem quite clever. You definitely seem smarter than my sister with an IQ of 115, and I tend to assume you're smarter than my 125. On the other hand, I'm sure you're not in Marilyn vos Savant 190 territory. :p

Amazing what boredom can lead you to do when you're sick. ;)

But are you sure I don't just conduct myself more maturely online than the general preponderance of internet users? There is a difference between maturity and intelligence--and I do try to carry myself maturely. We all carry ourselves differently offline and on. I've seen people who are intelligent type in moronic textspeak and vice versa.

You might be right. But what we call IQ is most analogous to "processing speed" on intellectual tasks more than anything. In fact, most IQ tests make use of verbal analogy for some questions. Still, what's in IQ tests is far simpler than actual dialog.

What I've learned teaching English is that you need to be fairly intelligent to have sophisticated writing. Not having sophisticated writing doesn't mean you aren't intelligent, exactly. I've seen some brilliant people who can't right for beans. But... you have to process things quickly and efficiently to be able to string a good point together, and to respond effectively to the prompt or to the person you're talking to.

You can't have amazing writing without at least a certain level of intelligence. While I think that threshhold is certainly below my sister's actual intelligence, she's put zero effort into developing her writing and hasn't developed it. I would assume most people who write better than her are probably smarter than her.

But you know... the fact that you have me on the defensive just proves my point here. ;p

Hmm, I hadn't really thought of how writing requires intelligence. It does make sense. But I always had a problem processing new information in school. Grammar and simple mathematics were easy for me, but I absolutely struggled with biology and higher mathematics.

You're a teacher? I did not know that. It's pretty cool. Have you ever thought of making your students write fanfiction as a writing assignment?
