Contest: Crossovers!

 As kids, we often mashed our toys together, regardless of Copyright. Superman would take command of G.I. Joe to defeat the combined forces of Doctor Doom and the Decepticons, while Barbie took a break from her idealistic lifestyle to become a Pokemon master. And the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles got recruited into Starfleet and taught Spock the wonders of pizza. (And from the furor arose Mister Rogers in a blood-stained sweater.)

And thus, the Crossover was born. It's something we never really outgrew, either. To this day, seeing our favorite characters from different stories meet and compete is a guilty pleasure that we all like to indulge in. So now's your chance to indulge yourselves for prizes!











The Objective

:

:bulletgreen: For artists, draw a depiction of two different properties from books, comics, movies, TV, etc. encountering each other.

:bulletgreen: For writers, write a fan fiction with two different properties from books, comics, movies, TV, etc. encountering each other.

The Deadline:

January 9th 2013, midnight PST

The Rules:

Contestants may submit one entry per category, fan art and fan fiction.

Art:

:bulletgreen: Entries must be newly-created specifically for this contest.

:bulletgreen: Copyright "canon" characters must be used. No fancharacters, sorry.

:bulletgreen: All mediums are allowed.

:bulletgreen: All of deviantART's submission rules still apply.

:bulletgreen: If you use stock material, be sure to properly credit the sources!

:bulletgreen: Submissions must be entered into the "Contests > Crossovers" gallery.

Literature:

:bulletgreen: Entries must be newly-written specifically for this contest.

:bulletgreen: Copyright "canon" characters must be used. No fancharacters, sorry.

:bulletgreen: Spelling and grammar are, of course, important.

:bulletgreen: 1.5 K words maximum.

I wanted to enter, but the crossover project I'm currently working on will be, like, a chaptered story, and so far I only have the end planned out. And I have work-related stuff to do, meaning I can't even write a preview chapter in a rush >.<

Do the characters have to be completely fictional? I wanted to crossover two movies but one of the movie's main characters are a real band as themselves, even though the movie is a completely fictional story.

Every single contest. A lot of it is new kids who don't bother to read the category system and just click randomly, and a lot is non-English-speakers who alos click randomly because they don't understand. Every gallery has this problem, it's just a lot more obvious in smaller galleries like Contests.

And you want to know the scary thing? We've already begun cleaning it up.

This is the first official dA contest I've entered, and I've never really looked at those galleries before. I can't imagine how annoying that must be to clear up. :no: Although, on the plus side, I did see some good entries mixed in with all the clutter.

(And somehow, when I first read it, I completely missed the fact there'd be prizes for both literature and visual art. I admit, that makes me feel better. I always find it odd when contests try to judge the two against each other. They're completely different mediums. :shrug: )

Yes, it's especially annoying on my dialup connection, and dA has been glitchy as of late--it's been giving the other CVs problems too when I enlisted their help. I've been moving about two a day, rough average.

You're right, they're completely different mediums and I always feel uncomfortable entering contents where the two are judged side by side. There's always a bias towards art.

I've noticed the bias too. :hmm: I was (pleasantly) surprised in one fan contest where a fanfic won first place, and art pieces came in second and third. But usually the visual art comes out on top.
