Welcome to Daily Deviations PE WeekWelcome to Daily Deviations week!
Over the course of this week we'll celebrate the positive side of DDs and discuss the negatives, allay some fears, and address some myths in the hopes that all members of dA will have a better understanding of how and why DDs are featured. We hope that everyone will enjoy what we have prepared for you all as we tried to incorporate the feedback you have so generously given us as we prepared for this week. We hope that we will address your concerns, but feel free to ask questions at any time!

Someone shared this essay about fan fiction and its history. I suggest reading it; "fan" fiction has been around a lot longer than most people think (spoiler: since the dawn of storytelling).
And finally, I'm working on a new categorization system for the fan fiction gallery. I would like to propose it to $Moonbeam13 in the next couple weeks. Some of my ideas will borrow from the much-more-developed Literature category, such as having a new subcategory for poetry, and subcategories to differentiate between chapters and one-shots. Now's your opportunity to suggest/request ideas for our gallery. What would you like to see?

I'm just here to super-super-super second `HaveTales-WillTell's recommendation. As far as trying to say fanfic is lit goes, though, you're gonna hit a lot of walls from lit people who are like 'audience wtf' and, honestly, I don't think fanfic should be held to the same standards as lit since the purpose is so different. If it meets them, that's great--just not necessary.
However, what about the possibility of allowing something like this to be posted into a certain category?

What you're seeing there is one of my Scraps. It is NOT a deviation, because I'm aware the current system does not allow for such things to be submitted as full-fledged deviations. I just have it there so I can link it onto my profile page. (Even with subfolders, I continue to update my Table of Contents files.) But perhaps there should be a legitimate category to do that in. It's a kludge, compared to re-coding the site, but it might be a more feasible solution.
I must also agree that merely having "Sci-Fi" as a category for me to post into is nowhere near enough. In my Star Trek fanfic I have a huge gamut of genres I write for. Some of it is very military, war-based fiction, whereas some is more psychological/character, and some is even religious and philosophical in nature. I also think that if there is one category you MUST have, it is "Alternate Universe." Anyone who reads The Desolate Vigil or any of my Catacombs of Oralius AU works is going to get one heck of a surprise when they see a version of Dukat who is a genuinely good man, if there's no way to set AU stuff apart!
(Similarly, "crossovers" should get a category of their own.)
But there are some things I don't really care for in the Fan ART gallery, that I don't want to see repeated here. This probably applies to Star Wars fans just as much as Trekkies, and really any other fandom with a large expanded universe outside the movies and TV shows. If you were to create categories based on, say, "Movies," "TV," and "Literature," subdivided in that fashion, someone from a fandom like ST/SW runs into a problem. I may have some stuff inspired by what I saw on TV, some inspired by what I saw in Trek movies, and some that I drew out of the tie-in literature. One of my best characters came out of a tie-in novel, and was never seen on screen. So what is HE fanart of--the show, or literature, or somehow both? You can't put him in a neat category like that.
And one last request. Please move the Fanfic category out from under Fan Art. I just now found out that a Fanfic category even existed, and had been filing all of my stuff (improperly, I now see) under Literature. I didn't think I had anywhere else to put it. I don't think it makes the slightest bit of sense for fan fiction to be a subcategory of what people will assume to be strictly visual art. Visual art and literature are two VERY different worlds!
I'm not keen on doing such an extensive recategorization of my gallery until there's an ETA for the new system, but the way it's currently set up makes it very easy to not realize there's a subcategory. And I wouldn't have known if not for browsing through that series of articles on DD's and finding the one that had the list of all the CV's. It was only by finding your CV listing that I even realized the Fanfic category existed.
Thanks for listening.
I really like your "AU" and "Crossovers" gallery ideas. I am definitely going to use those.
BTW, I'm not going to get in trouble with the Literature CVs for the apparently large-scale miscategorization in my gallery, while I'm waiting for a new system to come into place so I can move my stuff only once, will I?
