:new: Okay! Twenty-one people interested are in this book. I went on to random.org today and had it select a number between 1 and 21. The number it selected was 15. I brought up the list of people who faved this journal and...

SkylerFarrier won the drawing! Congrats Skylerfarrier. And sorry to everyone else. But now that you know about The Pride of Chanur, you can go look for it at your local library or used bookstore. You should!

I suddenly realized that today is the sixth anniversary of my joining this site. Wowee. I've come pretty far on here... thanks in no small part to the community and friends I've made while here. I learned what I'm good at creatively and developed those talents, and I'm sure over the years to come, I'll push my boundaries further with help from you all. So to commemorate this event, I'm going to hold a little raffle I've been meaning to do for a while.

You see, I love old, used books. The wonderful musty smell of old paper; that special crinkling sound the pages make when you turn them; the wonder of who has held the pages before me, enjoyed it as much as I have; the spine you don't have to feel guilty about breaking because someone has done it for you. So long as it's in good condition, I'll choose a used book over a brand-now copy any day.

So! I'm looking for people who share that love with me, and someone who I want to share one of my favorite books ever with. I went down to the used book store and picked up another copy of The Pride of Chanur by C.J. Cherryh, the first volume in a series of one of my favorite science fiction stories. There is only one human character in story, and he is not the usual window into the world--he's seen through the eyes of the protagonist species, the hani. If you like aliens that are actually alien, stories that postulate on and explore how these alien cultures might be like, with all the drama of interplanetary chases and political intrigue, this is a story you'll love.  And after you read it, you'll understand why Cherryh is one of my favorite authors. She wields prose with a unique, masterful flair that's practically poetic.

I am going to mail this copy out to one lucky person who faves this journal. That's all you have to do, fave this journal, and in a week I'll randomly select one of you and mail it out to you. I hope you'll enjoy this book as much as I have!
